The Proteus project will use state of the art detectors that will enable unprecedented sensitivity for in vivo in situ optical imaging and sensing.

These devices exploit the properties of novel ultrafast optical detectors (single photon avalanche diodes) and the power of CMOS electronics. We aim to integrate the sensor into our clinical trials in 2018.

The team have designed a bespoke line sensor to harness the ultra high sensitivity and speed of these devices to detect, timestamp and process photons at unprecedented rates, for applications including chemical sensing and fluorescence lifetime imaging.

A first line sensor was sent for manufacture in Feb 2015 and is currently being integrated and packaged ready for test in our labs. The second line sensor was sent for manufacture in early July 2015 and has the following key features:

  • Ultra high speed readout (1 million lines per second for video rate imaging)
  • 512 spectral bins (1 nm resolution)
  • Programmable bin-width time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) counting pixels
  • 50ps time resolution target for Raman background suppression
  • Coarse bin width (nanoseconds) for video-rate fluorescence lifetime imaging
