A dying cell has been stained

Taken with a microscope at 40x optical magnification and a further digital zoom, this image shows a cell 100 micrometres across (about the width of a human hair), that is dying. A collection of cells in a dish were labelled with a special stain, which was taken up by dying cells but not by those that are living.

The image has been processed to show the most intensely stained areas as bright white, those with less staining in red, and with no staining at all in black.
