Gram stain of patient corneal scraping, confirming fungal infection.

This image, taken at the Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai, India, shows cells scraped from the cornea of a patient. The cells were stained with a special substance that creates the purple colour (a ‘Gram stain’) to highlight if there is any infection present. This patient was confirmed as having a fungal infection.
