Red Beaded Lungs

Nikola Krstajic – May 2016
.

This image, showcasing two colour widefield fluorescence endoscopy, allows us to see ex vivo lung structure and weakly fluorescing red beads (3% Inspec, ThermoFisher Scientific) at 200 frames per second using LED based illumination. This demonstrates how clinically-safe LED illumination used in sync with a camera can allow us to acquire very fast imaging, which in turn can greatly reduce motion-induced artefacts.

The image has been reproduced in a paper by Krstajić et al, published in the Journal of Biomedical Optics, 2016. The sample was prepared by postdoctoral student Dr Tushar Choudhary.
