This image depicts the architecture of the alveolar region of the lung, where gas exchange takes place. The sample was set up by adding a special gel to preserve the delicate structure of the airways, then staining living cells in green, and dead cells in red.
The dark holes within the image demonstrate the complex network of ducts required to achieve the extremely high surface area within this organ which allows for a larger uptake of oxygen – vital for our existence.
